Mr. Evan Hunter
Mr. Bachelor of Science in Biology, Minor in Music Performance (Piano), Denison University
Master of Science in Biology, Northeastern University Fox
Mr. Evan is a dedicated classical and jazz pianist and an experienced music educator based in North Jersey. His journey began in high school jazz band, sparking a lifelong passion for exploring two key questions: What is jazz? and How can musicians enhance expression while minimizing physical strain?
At Denison University, under the guidance of Dr. Richard Lopez, Evan refined his technique and deepened his musicality. His hard work earned him the prestigious Fannie Judson Farrar Memorial Award. As a senior, he performed a recital featuring works by Bach, Brahms, Liszt, and Prokofiev. He was also honored with the Marjorie C. Chan Award for his contributions to the music department. Additionally,
Evan’s exposure to the Alexander Technique during this time helped him reduce tension and unlock greater creativity at the piano. While pursuing graduate studies in biology at Northeastern University, Evan expanded his musical repertoire into jazz under the mentorship of Boston pianist Harvey Diamond. Harvey’s teaching shaped Evan’s approach to jazz as an expressive art form, emphasizing expressive emotion over mere academic study.
Evan’s teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that each student possesses unique strengths and needs when it comes to learning music. Inspired by Glenn Gould’s observation that these differences allow us to interpret music in distinct ways, Evan tailors his approach to suit each student’s individuality. By building a personalized path for each learner, he helps them discover their musical footing while addressing any theoretical or technical challenges along the way.
